Minister’s Musings

In our year-long Twelve Powers study, August is the month we look at the Power of Will. This is also the month that summer really sets in. As we enter the “dog days” of summer it is natural for us seek relief from the heat of the day and sometimes of the evening too. Many of us head off to the cooler climes of the mountains for a respite from the heat and humidity that comes this time of year in Florida.

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to be comfortable outside while swimming, golfing or the many other summer activities we enjoy? All it would take would be the ability to be able to regulate the body temperature and viola overheating problem solved. Although that may sound farfetched, there are a number of eastern yogis who can do just that. Whether it is hot or cold they can actually regulate their body temperature to accommodate themselves to their environment. They do this by the focus of the power of their mind. Essentially they are using their power of will to stay cool or warm.

Usually when we think of will it is associated with want. An untrained, personal will focuses on fulfilling a perceived need, and in manifesting whatever it is, to gratify or satiate that need. In Truth there is no lack and anything that may be needed is already supplied. Our place is to align our minds and thoughts with Divine Mind and be open to receive what Spirit has for us. The true purpose of your power of will is to lay hold of your thoughts and redirect them, “will them”, away from lack thinking. We do this in harmony with our Power of Understanding. As Winifred Hausmann in her book Your God Given Potential says “The will determines the movement; the understanding determines the direction.” Even though we may not be adept enough to use will to keep cool in the summer heat we can certainly use it stay cool as we affirm with understanding faith the Presence of Spirit working in and through every aspect of our lives.

With you in the Heart of Christ
